A lot of its features are broken for the latest update - hell, you can't even edit what's in your hotbar - but the latest up-to-date version does have the appearance settings completely working. So, just go to coordinates (0 0) in your ship's nav then go to the closest system's innermost planet ( or any other similarly obvious to find planet that you easily locate without coordinates ), plop down a massive crate with everything you own in it and then just make the new character and go there.Īlso, there's an inventory editor called Starcheat. If you've started the main questline, you can actually keep the clue items with you to make the questline a lot less tedious for other characters since you can just give them the items, because the universe is actually the same one no matter who you're playing as.
Well, making a new character doesn't have to mean starting fresh. Just be sure to change to a look you want to keep, as you'll have to go through the same lengthy process in order to change it again.

After all that, you're free to delete the temporary character and the "editme-" and "backup-" files created by the scripts. Pack your file back up and, if done properly, you'll see the new appearance transferred over to your main character when you open the game. Once you have that done, copy the whole "identity" parameter from the temporary character and paste it cleanly over that of your main character. If you don't have ready access to the game's assets, then I recommend creating a new temporary character with the appearance you want, and unpacking that one's file as well (without getting the UUIDs mixed up). The "identity" parameter (which handles a player character's hairstyle, color palettes, gender, idle pose, and name) is located near the bottom of the unpacked character file in the text editor. Since the guide's links to StarReader and SBSE are outdated, you'll have to use the scripts and manually unpack and edit the character.
